As the holiday shopping season approaches, major shipping companies FedEx and UPS are implementing new strategies to attract a broader customer base. For the first time, these industry giants are extending discounts typically reserved for large corporate clients to smaller businesses. This move is intended to capture a larger share of holiday shipments amidst a shorter peak season and an evolving shipping market.
This year, the peak shipping season — which runs from Black Friday through December 31 — is five days shorter due to a late Thanksgiving. This compressed timeline is anticipated to intensify the competition among shippers, as they race to handle an expected decrease in holiday shipping volume. Experts note that total holiday package volumes continue to decline from their pandemic-era highs in 2021, adding further pressure on FedEx and UPS to adapt.
In a bid to counteract these challenges, FedEx and UPS are now offering attractive discounts, including fuel surcharge reductions, to smaller businesses. These discounts were traditionally limited to high-volume shippers, but as Robert Persuit of ShipMatrix explains, “No customer is too small to be considered for discounts” this season. Customers with annual shipping expenditures under $500,000 are now eligible for these savings, demonstrating both companies' dedication to broadening their customer base.

The competition for holiday shipping dollars extends beyond FedEx and UPS. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has seen steady growth in its ground parcel market share, while Amazon now fulfills more than two-thirds of its own deliveries. Walmart has also joined the field with its own same-day delivery services, challenging the traditional carriers to innovate and appeal to smaller e-commerce players.
Despite recent economic headwinds, FedEx and UPS report success with their adjusted pricing strategies. Both companies have reported gains in market share within the business-to-business shipping sector and among high-value e-commerce shipments. This holiday season will be a critical test for both carriers as they strive to sustain and expand their market positions amid increasing competition.
