Mountain Air Cargo, based in the United States, has taken delivery of its first ATR 72-600 freighter. On March 6, the ATR 72-600F first flew from New Bern, North Carolina to Raleigh, North Carolina.

Mountain Air Cargo had previously applied to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for permission to operate large aircraft, indicating in its application that it intended to add an ATR-72-600F freighter to its fleet. Under contract with FedEx, the aircraft is intended for use in interstate and international charter cargo operations.

The new ATR 72-600F freighter is anticipated to increase the cargo capacity and versatility of the company. Mountain Air Cargo stated, "We are thrilled to offer containerized service with the new aircraft's versatility!"

Mountain Air Cargo, a subsidiary of AirT headquartered in Denver, North Carolina, offers flight and maintenance services in the eastern half of the United States and the Caribbean. FAA-issued 14 CFR Part 135 and Part 121 certificates are held by the company, which operates a fleet of 25 Cessna Caravans, 9 ATR-42s, and 9 ATR-72s on cargo flights in the US and the Caribbean.

Since 1980, Mountain Air Cargo has been one of FedEx's seven U.S. feeder air carriers under a dry-lease agreement. Additionally, the company owns a 14 CFR Part 145 Repair Station in Kinston, North Carolina, which provides maintenance services to the company as well as to other commercial and government air carriers.
