Red Sea crisis is expected to last at least into second half of 2024

The persistent assaults on the Red Sea shipping lane by Yemeni Houthi pirates, spurred by the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, remain a significant concern for the global supply chain and economy at large.

This ongoing situation has sparked numerous discussions and analyses regarding its potential duration, impact on shipping rates, and implications for supply chain strategies and contingency plans.

For instance, Maersk, a prominent shipping company, has recently announced a significant alteration in its operations. Vessels slated to traverse the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden will now be rerouted south around the Cape of Good Hope for the foreseeable future. While this measure is deemed essential, it unavoidably extends transit times by approximately 10-142 days. Maersk further stated this week that it anticipates disruptions related to the Red Sea to persist well into the latter half of this year.

In a recent interview with Chris Rogers, the Head of Supply Chain Research at S&P Global Market Intelligence, Rogers concurred with Maersk's assessment.

He emphasized that the Houthis' actions in Yemen, ostensibly in support of Palestine in its conflict with Israel, signify a broader regional agenda. Rogers warned that without decisive action from the U.S. military to deter Houthi attacks on shipping, such disruptions will persist, extending into the latter half of the year.

Rogers speculated on the implications for Peak Season planning if disruptions indeed persist, noting that a 10-day increase in ocean transit time would necessitate adjustments in scheduling, production, and procurement, potentially advancing Peak Season preparations by two weeks.

The latest Port Tracker report, jointly released by the National Retail Federation and maritime consultancy Hackett Associates, highlights concerns over disruptions in the Red Sea. However, Ben Hackett, founder of Hackett Associates, reassured that the shipping industry has swiftly adapted by augmenting vessel capacity and returning to regular weekly ship arrivals.

In a recent report, NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy, Jonathan Gold, emphasized that despite only 12% of U.S.-bound cargo passing through the Suez Canal, the escalating situation in the Red Sea is causing widespread volatility and uncertainty. Gold stressed that U.S. retailers are actively working to counter the impact of delays and rising costs, but prolonged disruptions could significantly exacerbate the situation. He called for increased collaboration among partners and allies to safeguard vessels and crews, averting another year of supply chain upheaval.

The ongoing crisis remains fluid and unpredictable, reminiscent of the pandemic, underscoring the imperative for supply chains to exhibit agility, responsiveness, and resilience amidst unforeseen challenges. While the outcome remains uncertain, one certainty is the determination of the global supply chain to navigate these obstacles, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of cargo despite potential setbacks.
