Vietnam’s pepper industry, often dubbed “black gold” , earned over USD 690 million in the first five months of 2025, with the U.S., Germany, and India together accounting for almost 41% of total export volume.
According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam exported approximately 99,900 tons of pepper from January to May 2025. While this marks a 12.5% decrease in volume compared to the same period last year, export revenue surged 40.5% year-over-year to reach USD 690.4 million.
This revenue growth was largely fueled by a spike in global pepper prices. The average export price hit USD 6,910 per ton, a 61.1% increase compared to 2024.
The U.S., Germany, and India were Vietnam’s three largest pepper buyers, contributing significantly to the export boom:
United States: Purchased 24,687 tons worth nearly USD 185 million. Although volume dropped by 18.9%, the value jumped 34.8%.
Germany: Imported 8,451 tons valued at nearly USD 64 million up 11.5% in volume and 73.7% in value.
India: Bought 7,501 tons, generating over USD 53 million. Volume increased by 8.3%, while value rose sharply by 86.7%.
The UK also recorded an impressive 114% surge in import value, highlighting broad-based growth in demand from key markets.
As of June 2025, domestic pepper prices range between VND 137,000 and 138,000 per kilogram (approx. USD 5.4–5.5/kg). At major export hubs like Ho Chi Minh City, black pepper with a density of 500 g/l is quoted at USD 6,300 per ton, while 550 g/l fetches USD 6,400 per ton. White pepper prices have reached USD 9,300 per ton.
Industry experts forecast a potential short-term stabilization or slight dip in prices due to irregular demand patterns and supply constraints. However, medium- to long-term prospects remain bullish amid ongoing global supply shortages.

This performance highlights Vietnam’s continued strength as a key global pepper supplier, despite fluctuating volumes. For international buyers and logistics partners, price volatility and concentrated market demand (especially from the U.S., EU, and India) signal the need for more adaptive and resilient supply chain strategies. Worldcraft Logistics recommends close monitoring of global inventory levels and proactive contract planning to capitalize on market movements.
