Collaboration Between Walmart and Packsize

Retail giant Walmart Inc. and packaging specialist Packsize announced their collaboration on the Ultra5, a right-sized, on-demand box machine designed specifically for Walmart's deployment.

Ultra5 Installed in Walmart's Next-Generation Fulfillment Centers

The Ultra5 has already been installed in the first of Walmart's four next-generation fulfillment centers. Similar to Packsize's legacy X5 machine, the Ultra5 can produce up to 600 boxes per hour, minimizing costs and environmental impact of excess corrugated box material. The box configuration also allows retailers to fit up to one-third more boxes on carrier trailers, improving shipping efficiency.

Demonstration at ProMat 2023

The Ultra5 machine and its technology were showcased at the ProMat 2023 material handling and logistics show in Chicago. Prathibha Rajashekhar, senior vice president of innovation and automation for Walmart U.S., praised the collaboration with Packsize in developing an innovative packaging solution that reduces waste and enhances the customer unboxing experience.

Faster Throughput and Unique Features

The Ultra5's speed allows orders to be packaged, labeled, and ready to ship in just 30 minutes. The machine also features a "Flaps Down" function that secures box flaps with a paper band, improving the ergonomics for workers involved in picking and placing items.

Steve Larsen, Packsize's vice president of research & development, solution design, and customer success, highlighted the benefits for Walmart, including cost reductions in freight and dunnage as well as increased labor efficiency. The Ultra5 eliminates guesswork in picking and ensures better throughput and productivity for Walmart associates.
